“Children learn eagerly and well when they have need of the knowledge.”
― Caroline Pratt
Teach them what they are expected to know is good. But teaching them what they need to know is even better.
During the course of this observation task, I have come to realize how important it is to make sure that the concepts of the UOI will not only benefit the academic needs of the students but also the holistic development. As a teacher who strives for progressive education, the biggest struggle for me is the planning. Those who are familiar with progressive education know that the real stage of the teacher is on the wee hours where he/she plans and creates routines as simple as daily circle time. Not only that, diversity should also be taken into account. A progressive teacher or as I may say, a PYP teacher, should make his/her planning flexible to each child. Thus, differentiated learning should occur. This is one of the big challenges I want to address as I start my journey as a teacher here in a PYP curriculum.
The elements of PYP are not mere classroom designs. Before, i thought the learner profile was just for reminders but when I try to reflect now, it is more than that. The learner profile is a long-term shared holistic vision of education that will help in making our students achieve "international-mindedness". The elements (knowledge, concept, skills, attitude, action) are all interconnected, integrated and close-knitted. Because of this, it is my job as a teacher to facilitate the students as they construct their own meaning and knowledge. Truly, it is a great responsibilty and at the same time, a previledge to be a part of MPYPH because we are training ourselves to go beyond what teachers are defined to be.
We, the teachers, are the north stars of the children. We are way up there, observing, learning, and guiding. Now that I have scratched the surface of what PYP really is, I am quite determined to know more and learn more. Hopefully, I can use the things I learned inside the classroom. If ever I'll be a part of the preschool department, I will make sure that, even thought it will be hard, I will adjust and inspire my students to become internationally-minded cute little individuals.
I'm sure it's going to be a bumpy ride but that's okay. I've always been a fan of rollercoasters. It scares me but I'm not afraid of trying. PYP, I'm going to know you better, okay?
